Catherine Mountain, or Catherine’s Hill, is a 962-foot height in the Blacks Woods area of Hancock County, Maine, and the name also applies to the rise on Route 182 between Franklin and Cherryfield. The place is chiefly known through local folklore in which Catherine appears to travelers, often in a light blue evening gown, sometimes seeking a ride, while those who refuse her are said to meet misfortune. Explanations for the name vary, from older supernatural tales to the possibility that it honored an otherwise forgotten woman. Along with nearby Schoodic and Black mountains, it stands as a prominent inland Downeast landmark where landscape and legend are closely linked.
