The Chester River Steamboat Company built the original Bogles Wharf around 1887 just upriver from here. The wharf extended 1,000 feet into the deeper waters of the Chester River to allow the loading and unloading of deep draft ships. Although it received some passenger traffic, it was primarily a shipping point for Eastern Neck Island produce bound for Baltimore. By 1910, steamboat transportation had become obsolete, and the original wharf declined with it. The present wharf extends into the sheltered water of Durdin Creek and has been used by watermen and recreational boaters for over a century. Though it is not in the same location as the original, it took the same name. The original Bogles Wharf appears on a 1903 map of Kent County, and an oyster shucking plant once stood on this site; active in the first half of the 20th century, it reflected the importance of fishery resources to the local community.
