Mercer County Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument
Military
Mercer County honored her sons who served in the United States Army and Navy from 1861 to 1866 with a monument dedicated on June 19, 1909, as a tribute to loyalty, patriotism, and valor. Its inscriptions proclaim liberty and union with one flag, one land, and one nation evermore, and invoke the ideal that it is sweet and fitting to die for one’s country. They also evoke the fallen in lines declaring that on fame’s eternal camping ground their silent tents are spread, and glory guards with solemn round the bivouac of the dead.
