Caughnawaga was the site of a Mohawk Indian Turtle Clan village from 1667 to 1693, the Jesuit Mission of St. Peter from 1669 to 1684, and the home of Kateri Tekakwitha, "Lilly of the Mohawks," from 1667 to 1677. A Mohican attack was repulsed there in 1669, and the place was destroyed in a French raid in 1693. Dutch settlers were there prior to 1750, and the Caughnawaga Reformed Dutch Church was built in 1763. It was also the scene of the first Valley Revolutionary clash at the raising of the Liberty Pole in 1775, the great review of 3000 Continentals and militia in 1776, and two Tory-Indian raids in 1780.
