Hampton County was established on February 18, 1878, from what had once been part of Beaufort District. It was named in honor of Wade Hampton, Lieutenant General, C.S.A., Governor of South Carolina from 1876 to 1879, and United States Senator from 1879 to 1891. The courthouse cornerstone was laid by General Hampton on October 12, 1878.
