Charlestown State Park is a large Indiana park on the Ohio River east of Charlestown, assembled from former Indiana Army Ammunition Plant land in transfers from 1993 through 2004 to reach 5,100 acres. Known for the unglaciated Fourteen Mile Creek valley, Ohio River overlooks, and more than 14 miles of trails, it also preserves fossils, karst sinkholes, and habitat for 72 bird species. Archaeological discoveries include a Native American cooking area dating to 2,000 B.C. with firepits, nut-cracking stone slabs, and Laurel chert. The park has expanded with a boat ramp, campground, rebuilt Portersville Bridge, and guided access to Rose Island.
