Neptune Pool at Hearst Castle in San Simeon, California, is a monumental outdoor swimming pool ensemble designed by Julia Morgan for William Randolph Hearst and begun in 1924. Rebuilt and enlarged several times before being completed in 1936, it combines water, stone, sculpture, colonnades, and revival architecture on a terrace overlooking the ranch, coast, and Pacific. Tile work by Albert Solon and Frank Schemmel helped make it one of the estate’s most theatrical spaces, with imported Roman elements, Vermont marble, fountains, dressing rooms, and sculpture. After drought, leaks, and a major restoration from 2017 to 2018, it reopened to the public in 2019.
