The Williams Lake Project is a planned redevelopment area owned and operated by Hudson River Valley Resorts, LLC, providing public access to a privately owned section of trail in collaboration with the Wallkill Valley Land Trust and the Open Space Institute under a temporary easement that is expected to become permanent. The next 1.5 miles of designated trail cross 779 acres of private land, with more than 500 acres to be protected in forever wild conservancy, and visitors are asked to remain on the trail because adjacent lands contain natural and man-made hazards. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, much of this area was part of the American Natural Cement industry, and the remains of three mining and manufacturing operations are visible beside the trail. Many abandoned mines and ruins are unstable, while the mines also serve as critical hibernacula for endangered bats. The development plan aims to protect bat habitat, stabilize and restore cement-era ruins, and redevelop the former Williams Lake Hotel lands into a sustainable resort and residential community focused on wellness and outdoor recreation.
