The Asheville Botanical Garden is a 10-acre nonprofit garden in Asheville, North Carolina, dedicated to studying and promoting plants and habitats native to the Southern Appalachians. Created beginning in 1961 on eroded, abandoned timberland, it developed through early cleanup, trail building, and plantings designed by landscape architect Doan Ogden. More than 5,000 plants were transplanted there in its early years, many rescued from sites facing destruction. Today it contains more than 750 native species and serves as an educational center with classes in botany and gardening. Though on university-owned land, it operates independently with donations, memberships, staff, and volunteers.
