Composed of infantry regiments from Indiana, Wisconsin, and Michigan, the Iron Brigade fought with the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War from 1861 to 1865. It received its name for valor at the Battle of South Mountain, Maryland, in 1862. It sustained combat fatalities among the highest in the Union armies.
