An old sawpit dating back to 1813 was discovered by Herbert Lloyd and Julius Webb when they built this brick building in 1900 to replace a row of wooden shops. The building originally housed University Athletic Shop, a general merchandise store, and Carolina Confectionary. Robert Varley operated a men's store and pipe shop from 1937 to 1990, and next door the Little Shop for women operated from 1933 to 1997.
