The Ware Mounds and Village Site, also called the Running Lake Site, is an archaeological complex west of Ware in southern Illinois with three surviving platform mounds and a village area spanning about 160 acres. Late Woodland and Mississippian peoples lived there from about 800 to 1300. Archaeologists regard it as especially significant because it may be the only known Mississippian village in the Mississippi River valley of southern Illinois, and its location near major chert sources suggests it may have been a trading center. The site also yielded a notable Mississippian fluorite statue, nicknamed Anna, discovered in 1873 and now held by the Field Museum in Chicago.
