Within this block, Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas held their second joint debate on August 27, 1858, during their sensational contest. In it, Douglas declared, “I am not for the dissolution of the Union under any circumstances.” Lincoln declared, “This government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free.” It was dedicated by President Theodore Roosevelt on June 3, 1903.
