Ranchers sometimes needed to move relatively large quantities of soil for leveling ground, road construction, and similar work, and they used horse-drawn scrapers for this purpose. Two versions of the fresno were used: a smaller unit pulled by one horse and a larger fresno pulled by a two-horse team. The operator walked behind the scraper and controlled the horse power and the amount of soil to be moved.
