The Strong National Museum of Play in downtown Rochester, New York, grew from Margaret Woodbury Strong’s personal collection, established in 1969 and opened to the public in 1982. Initially focused on the social and cultural history of everyday Americans from 1830 to 1940, it shifted in the 1990s toward collecting, preserving, and interpreting the history of play. Expanded several times, it became a major institution devoted to toys, games, childhood, and video games, with immersive galleries, the National Toy Hall of Fame, major research archives, and exhibits that range from imaginative play spaces to serious explorations of war’s impact on children.
