In the early 1800s, members of the Huey family took pioneering steps toward establishing the community that eventually became the City of Hueytown. Hueytown was officially incorporated on May 6, 1960, under a Mayor/Council form of government, and its original charter established basic city services and created police and fire departments, with rescue and other services added later. Located in the southwest corner of Jefferson County about 15 miles from Birmingham, Hueytown has 18,500 residents and covers 32 square miles. Its economy has been founded on hardworking families engaged in many occupations, and in earlier years its citizens contributed to the county's coal and steel-making industries. Hueytown has gained national acclaim as the home of NASCAR's living legends, the Alabama Gang. The original members were Red Farmer, who won over 750 features and continued running dirt tracks, Bobby Allison with 85 NASCAR wins, and Donnie Allison with 10 Winston Cup wins. They were later joined by Neil Bonnett, who won 18 Winston Cup victories, and Davey Allison, who won 19 Winston Cup victories. Regarded as the most successful and popular group known to racing, they brought honor and recognition to Hueytown, which named streets for them, including Allison-Bonnett Memorial Parkway and Red Farmer Drive.
