The Edison and Ford families spent much of their time in Florida enjoying the woods, waters, and wildlife around their winter homes. Their photographs show family members fishing, canoeing, searching for shells along the sandy beaches at the mouth of the Caloosahatchee River, camping, and exploring together. Thomas Edison angled for tarpon, grouper, and other fish, while Mina Edison took special pleasure in watching birds and later worked as a dedicated conservationist to protect birds and their habitats through the National Audubon Society and the Chautauqua Bird, Tree, and Garden Club. Henry and Clara Ford often joined the Edisons in outdoor activities, including campouts in the Florida Everglades. The family’s experiences also included feeding and photographing Jerry, a pet brown pelican, nature walks, trips into the Everglades arranged by steamboat captain and nature expert Fred Menge, and notable catches such as Charles Edison’s fifteen-foot sawfish along the Caloosahatchee River.
