Built in 1907 for the Freehold & Atlantic Highlands Railway and later part of the Central Railroad of New Jersey, Freneau Station stood at mile post 1.64 on the Central Railroad of New Jersey’s Freehold Branch, the first station south of Matawan at the Route 79 road crossing. It closed in April 1953, was donated and moved to Pine Creek Railroad in Marlboro, New Jersey, in June 1955, and was moved again to Allaire in December 1964. Originally named Mount Pleasant, the town was renamed in 1890 for poet, journalist, and Revolutionary War patriot Philip Freneau.
