Benjamin Britton Chandler was active in the Red Shirt campaign that resulted in Gen. Wade Hampton’s election as South Carolina governor in 1876. He later served as Supervisor of Williamsburg County and was twice elected to the South Carolina House, where he was known as “an honest and manly representative” of his people. His home was located here until it burned in 1985.
