In 1929, San Felipe Independent School District formed, and one of its first decisions was to establish a high school. Residents voted unanimously for a bond for the institution, and the building was completed at the corner of Plaza and Garza Streets, where the new high school opened in December 1930. The campus hosted a full range of grades, with secondary students in the main building and grades six through eight in a posterior structure. The school offered traditional subjects, competitive sports, and a wide range of fine arts, and the Mighty Mustangs' colors were purple and gold. In 1932, the school held its first commencement exercises for a graduating class of seven students. It became known for caring teachers, supportive administrators, high parental involvement, and an encouraging atmosphere that helped shape students' later career and life success. It also served as a focal point for the community by holding adult education and citizenship classes, functioning as a voting place, and housing families displaced by floods. In 1971, the high school closed when San Felipe I.S.D. consolidated with Del Rio I.S.D., but generations of former students and its alumni association have kept its memory alive as a cornerstone of the San Felipe community for more than 40 years.
