Pittsburg State University honors the sons and daughters who answered the nation’s call and expresses enduring gratitude for their sacrifices in peace and war so that freedom would prevail. It pairs that tribute with words praising soldiers and sailors who bravely bear their country’s cause, affirming that liberty belongs to those ready to guard and defend it, and invoking the bond of those who shed blood together. The university’s Veteran’s Memorial Amphitheater was dedicated on Memorial Day, May 31, 2004, with Governor Kathleen Sebelius, the Kansas Board of Regents, Pittsburg State University leaders, project director Dr. James AuBuchon, architect Sam Frey of Schaefer Johnson Cox Frey Architecture, general contractor Crossland Construction Company, and keynote speaker Sen. Bob Dole.
