Near here stood “New Market,” the home of Joseph McMinn, a Revolutionary veteran who served as governor of Tennessee from 1815 to 1821 and as Indian agent for the Cherokee from 1822 until his death near Calhoun on the Hiwassee River in 1824. He is buried there.
