Indians, fur traders, military expeditions, and settlers traveled through this area, where a major Indian trail passed. Alexander Ross passed here in 1841, John Works of the Hudson's Bay Company was here in 1825, the botanist David Douglas was here in 1826, Lt. Johnson of the Wilkes expedition explored here in 1814, and Lt. Arnold passed this point in 1853. The Old Camp Chelan-Ft. Walla Walla Trail passed near here, the Ferguson-Ladd stock crossing used in 1880 passed south of here, the old trail on the west side of the Coulee was named the Okanogan Trail, and the American Trail was on the east side.
