Cantigny Park in Wheaton, west of Chicago, transformed the former estate of Joseph Medill and his grandson Colonel Robert R. McCormick into a large public landscape of gardens, historic architecture, military history, and recreation. McCormick, who fought at the Battle of Cantigny in World War I, renamed the estate for that battle and directed that it become a public park through the foundation created from his fortune after his death in 1955. The park includes the restored Robert R. McCormick House, extensive ornamental gardens, the First Division Museum and Tank Park, and a major golf complex, making it a year-round civic and cultural destination.
