The Ash Grove community in Sawyer's Bend of the Harpeth River was known for its Union bridge, built jointly by Davidson and Williamson Counties. Burned during the Civil War, the bridge was replaced in 1881. Before being washed away in the flood of 1948, it was the last covered bridge on the Harpeth. The Armstrong, Cator Davis, Hill, Hulme, Moran, Morris, Pearre, Phipps, Sawyer, Stockett, and Vaughan families were prominent here. Ash Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church was built in 1893 on land donated by Dempsey R. Sawyer. With its closing in 1967, and the earlier closing of the public school in 1946, the community lost most of its identity.
