War Horse National Wildlife Refuge in central Montana consists of three separate sections, each built around a small lake or reservoir, and is part of the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge Complex. Generally unstaffed and lightly developed for visitors, it is most significant for its scattered water sources within sagebrush plains and Ponderosa pine groves shaped by acid-shale soils. When its lakes and reservoirs hold water, the refuge becomes especially valuable to migratory birds, with more than 100 species recorded. Other wildlife regularly found here includes Sage Grouse, pronghorn, and mule deer, and one reservoir is sometimes stocked with rainbow trout.
