Established in 1834 by Lieutenant T.H. Holmes, later a lieutenant general in the C.S.A., this post was visited in June 1834 by General Henry Leavenworth on his expedition to the Plains tribes. Edwards' Store, one mile west of here, was the last trading post for emigrants in the Gold Rush on the California Trail until Santa Fe. Jesse Chisholm was a partner in this store in 1836.
