Organized in 1856 with fewer than a dozen members, this congregation became part of Gatesville history for more than a century. Its first meeting was held in the Coryell County Courthouse, and early worship services took place in members' homes. The Rev. W.A. Mason served as the first pastor. In 1866, a stone building was erected as a community school and house of worship for all denominations. The congregation met in the Union Church until 1872, when its first sanctuary was built at the corner of Bridge and 7th Streets. Growing membership led to the acquisition of this property and completion of a new frame building in 1883. That building served the congregation until 1936, when a larger structure replaced it. Additional facilities were added over the years to support the church's expanding programs, and the congregation has continued to honor its founders and pioneers while serving the community through outreach programs.
