Great Council State Park opened north of Xenia on June 7, 2024, as Ohio’s 76th state park and a place to interpret the history of Tecumseh and the Shawnee people in a landscape closely tied to Shawnee history. The site stands where Old Chillicothe, a major Shawnee settlement led by Chief Blackfish, existed from 1777 to 1780, and its council house is believed to have stood on the ridge behind the park. Developed with Shawnee partners, the park centers on a large interpretive building, exhibits shaped to let present-day Shawnee people tell their own stories, and expanding grounds that connect the historic site to surrounding trails and landscape.
