In June 1862, Stonewall Jackson, retreating up the Valley before the converging columns of Fremont and Shields, turned at bay here. A mile southeast, Jackson’s cavalry commander Ashby was killed on June 6. At Cross Keys, six miles southeast, Ewell of Jackson’s army defeated Fremont on June 8. Near Port Republic, ten miles southeast, Jackson defeated Shields on June 9. This was the end of Jackson’s Valley Campaign.
