Crossover Island Light stands on the Saint Lawrence River in New York near the Canada–United States border, where it was established in 1848 to help guide traffic on a heavily traveled international waterway. The present lighthouse, first lit in 1882, was built on a stone molehead foundation of cast iron lined with brick and wood, a practical design for exposed river conditions. A white conical tower with a red lantern, it originally used a sixth-order Fresnel lens. The light was deactivated in 1941, and its significance was later recognized by listing the Crossover Island Light Station on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.
