The Texas Prison Museum in Huntsville, Texas, is devoted to the history of the state’s prison system in the city that has long served as a center of Texas corrections. Founded in 1989 and moved in 2002 to its present site northwest of town, it presents Texas penal history through artifacts, reconstructions, and items made by inmates. Its best-known object is Old Sparky, the electric chair used from 1924 to 1964 as Texas’s primary means of execution. Other exhibits include a life-size prison cell replica, material on the Texas prison rodeo, and collections of prisoner-made artwork and woodwork.
