Carroll County was established in 1822 and named in honor of William Carroll, an officer in the War of 1812 who served as governor of Tennessee from 1821 to 1827 and from 1829 to 1835, longer than any other man. Gibson County was established in 1823 and named in honor of Colonel John Gibson, who served with distinction under General Andrew Jackson in the Natchez Expedition of 1812 to 1813 and in the Creek Wars.
