Reynolda Gardens in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, preserves part of the former Reynolds estate as a public botanical garden that links the Reynolds family legacy with Wake Forest’s later history in the city. Created from land developed between 1906 and 1923 by R. J. Reynolds and Katharine Smith Reynolds, it included a 1913 greenhouse and a 4-acre formal garden designed beginning in 1915 by Thomas W. Sears. After much of the estate was dispersed following Katharine Reynolds’s death in 1924, their daughter Mary Reynolds Babcock donated the garden property to Wake Forest between 1958 and 1962. A 1995 reconstruction restored the formal garden’s original design.
