Howell Cemetery was founded in 1826 by Abraham Howell (1792-1867) and Sarah Andrews Howell (1794-1879), who were married in South Carolina on October 6, 1811, and settled in Monroe County, Mississippi in 1817. Their children were Andrew, John, Gilbert, Elisha, Elijah, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Mansel, Frances Caroline, Zillie Bryant, Charlotte Ann, Sarah McCloud, George Whiteman, Jane Hillard, Elias, Polly, Charity, and an infant son, with Andrew, Elisha, Elijah, Elizabeth, Mansel, Frances Caroline, Charlotte Ann, Sarah McCloud, George Whiteman, Jane Hillard, Elias, Polly, Charity, and the infant son buried here. It also honors Horace G. Howell, Sr. (1894-1952), a family historian, World War I veteran, educator, religious leader, sheriff of Monroe County from 1940 to 1944, and mayor of Aberdeen from 1948 to 1962.
