Webster County was formed in 1860 from Braxton, Nicholas, and Randolph and was named for Daniel Webster. It is noted for its fine mountain scenery, and its forest produced the tree that was the largest hardwood at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893. Randolph County was formed in 1787 from Harrison and was named for Edmund Jennings Randolph, a Virginia statesman and soldier. It is the largest county in the state, and Federal dominance of Tygart’s Valley in the Civil War largely determined control of West Virginia.
