The bridge carrying State Route 7 over Teens Run in Eureka, Ohio, was constructed in 1938 and was found eligible for the National Register of Historic Places in 2012 for its technical distinction as a state highway department bridge showing the early adaptation of integral technology to a continuous concrete slab bridge before standardization. Its primary characteristic is the absence of movable joints in or between the deck and the flexible end supports. As the Ohio Department of Highways Bureau of Bridges sought to eliminate intermediate deck expansion joints in all multiple-span structures, it adapted to the complex analysis and design these bridges required and employed technical innovations, including more secure foundations to minimize settlement of supports and flexible integral abutments. These features gave the bridge distinction as the longest and the primary prototype for thousands of similar bridges that followed. This design innovation began under Joseph R. Burkey, who was appointed Engineer of Bridges for the Ohio Department of Highways in 1925 after joining the Bureau of Bridges in 1911, and whose long career culminated in his service as chief of the bureau from 1925 to 1939. Under his direction, Ohio became the first state to adopt the routine use of continuous construction for all multiple-span bridges. The bridge was designed by Virgil A. Eberly and checked by Josephine E. Powers, a pioneering female architect, and its plans were reviewed by William S. Hindman, the primary reviewer, and William H. Rebe, the bureau's chief design engineer.
