Abernathy Field Station is a fifty-seven-acre protected ecology classroom in Washington, Pennsylvania, serving Washington and Jefferson College. About five miles southeast of campus, it preserves a compact mix of habitats, including deciduous forest, conifers, spring seeps, perennial streams, wetlands, and a mowed field. These ecosystems support diverse wildlife and more than one hundred trees, giving faculty and students a place to study ecological structure and function through supervised coursework and independent research. The station also includes real-time weather and stream monitoring systems for environmental data. Made available by Dr. Ernest and Janet Abernathy, it was further supported in 2008 by a one million dollar Howard Hughes Medical Institute grant for long-term ecological monitoring.
