At Hobkirk’s Hill, Lord Rawdon commanded fewer than 950 men. Most were American Loyalists serving in the Volunteers of Ireland, the King’s American Regiment, New York Volunteers, the South Carolina Royalists, and Major John Coffin’s dragoons, and there was also a company of Loyalist riflemen. The British 63rd Regiment had 180 men, and Rawdon searched the hospital at Camden for 50 more soldiers he believed fit to fight, forming them into a company called “Convalescents.” A detachment of the Royal Artillery with two six-pounder cannon supported the force.
