Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve protects the distinctive limestone tufa towers along the shores and shallow waters of Mono Lake in eastern California near Yosemite National Park. Created by the California State Legislature in 1981, it preserves one of the Mono Basin’s most recognizable geologic features and helps people understand the surrounding landscape and Mono Lake’s natural history. California State Park Rangers were assigned both resource protection and public programs, including shoreline talks and tours. After the federal designation of the surrounding lands as the Mono Basin National Scenic Area in 1984, visitor services were provided cooperatively by state and federal agencies and the Mono Lake Committee.
