On May 11, 1781, in the small village of Orangeburgh, two cannons owned by Captain Henry Felder played a vital part in a crucial episode of the American-British Revolution within the Orangeburgh District. Under General Sumter's command, Captain Henry Felder's militia company, including seven of his sons, guided Sumter's troops by way of Belleview Road, down Russell Street, and into Orangeburgh village. Firing the cannons along the way, Felder's troops defeated the British militia and gained control of the Orangeburgh post, helping free the district from British rule. The guns were Felder's pride and joy, and for many years bore the inscriptions "HP" on one and "H. Felder 1781" on the other. A staunch patriot from Switzerland, Felder brought with him a love of liberty, spoke proudly of his fatherland, and was willing to risk everything rather than submit to British tyranny. Near the end of the Revolution, British Tories killed him while he was defending his home, but the freedom for which he fought and died in Orangeburgh endured.
