On September 5, 1781, Admiral Comte de Grasse successfully engaged the British Fleet in the waters here in the Battle of the Capes, preventing crucial reinforcements from reaching Cornwallis and thus hastening his surrender. His decisive contribution helped win American independence, and France later gave this statue in grateful remembrance, dedicated on October 17, 1976.
