Hector J. Robinson Observatory in Lincoln Park, Michigan, began as a school science project in which Hector Robinson and his students built telescopes, including a larger instrument whose mirror they ground and polished themselves. A permanent domed observatory approved in 1964 became operational in 1965, and students later organized an Astronomy Club that expanded telescope building and astrophotography. After declining and lying dormant after 1982, the site was revived through efforts led by amateur astronomer Dr. Timothy Dey, teacher Leo Macmaster, community supporters, and grant funding. Renovated and reopened in September 2009, it now operates with a computer-controlled 14-inch Celestron telescope.
