Ryan Round Barn, in Johnson-Sauk Trail State Park north of Kewanee, Illinois, was completed in 1910 for Laurence Ryan, a Chicago surgeon who bought 320 acres to raise Black Angus cattle. Designed to house, feed, and groom the herd under one roof, the barn was built by the German immigrant Feurst and became the largest round barn in Illinois at 61 feet high and 74 feet across. After Ryan’s death in 1939, it passed to E. A. Johnson, was sold to the state in 1967, and entered the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. Preserved through local effort, it now operates seasonally as a museum of antique farm machinery.
