Born in Hickman, Elvis J. Stahr, Jr. became one of the town's most decorated citizens. After studying in England as a Rhodes Scholar, he was chosen by President John F. Kennedy to serve as Secretary of the Army in 1961. During his tenure, the country faced both the Berlin Crisis and the Bay of Pigs invasion. In 1968 he became President of the National Audubon Society and served in that position until 1979. He also served as President of West Virginia and Indiana Universities. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery on November 24, 1998.
