Skeggs Point is a scenic turnout on State Route 35 above Woodside on the San Francisco Peninsula, standing roughly 2,300 feet above sea level with a broad potential view over the southern reach of San Francisco Bay. It lies near Sierra Morena, one of San Mateo County’s higher summits. The place is named for Colonel John Hunt Skeggs, a retired U.S. Army officer and influential Caltrans District 4 engineer who helped shape major Bay Area road projects from about 1919 to 1952, including U.S. 101, State Route 35, and other key routes. It also became part of music lore as the spot where Neil Young wrote “Like a Hurricane.”
