In Dyer, Indiana, the "Ideal Section" of the Lincoln Highway runs for 1.5 miles from approximately Calumet Avenue in Dyer to Janice Drive in Schererville. Completed in 1923, it was designed and built as a model for road construction and was funded by county, state, and U.S. Rubber Co. Its features included a 100 foot right-of-way, 40 foot paved width, 10 inch steel-reinforced concrete, underground drainage, lighting, landscaping, a bridge, and pedestrian pathways. Austin F. Bement, secretary of the Lincoln Highway Association, was photographed there with his Packard. The Lincoln Highway, conceived by Indiana entrepreneur Carl G. Fisher and formally dedicated October 31, 1913, runs from New York City to San Francisco.
