Sheyenne National Grassland
Nature
1
Sheyenne National Grassland preserves a rare tallgrass prairie landscape in southeastern North Dakota near the Sheyenne River, where sandy soils and open grassland support diverse wildlife and plant life. Spread across public and private lands in Ransom and Richland counties, it is the only National Grassland in the United States tallgrass prairie region. The grassland includes North Dakota’s largest population of greater prairie chickens and habitat for the Dakota skipper butterfly, western prairie fringed orchid, and many ferns. It also remains a working landscape used by cattle ranchers and includes part of the North Country National Scenic Trail for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking.
