Fort Mott in Pennsville, New Jersey, began in 1872 as the Battery at Finn’s Point, but its early construction stopped in 1876 before the modern fort was developed under the coast-defense reforms recommended in 1885. Completed by 1902 and named in 1897 for Major General Gershom Mott, it formed part of the Harbor Defenses of the Delaware with Fort Delaware and Fort DuPont, protecting the river approaches. Its disappearing guns, casemated mine-defense battery, moat, and parados made it distinctive and able to resist attack from land as well as water. Active in the Spanish–American War and World War I, it later declined, closed in 1944, and became Fort Mott State Park in 1951.
