Allegan State Game Area, commonly called Allegan Forest, is a 50,000-acre protected forest in west-central Michigan near Allegan that serves as both public recreation land and wildlife habitat. Its hardwood landscape includes the Kalamazoo River and the broad waters of Lake Allegan behind Calkins Bridge Dam, supporting canoeing and fishing. Year-round use includes camping, hiking, biking, horseback riding, hunting, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing. Two primitive campgrounds, Ely Lake and Silver Creek, provide simple facilities in wooded settings. The area is especially active during hunting season and remains significant for preserving a large public forest in this part of Michigan while connecting people to outdoor recreation.
